BTH Activity Day October 2025

On a dry, sunny Saturday this October the BTH team were to be found setting up for one of our well-loved Activity Days. Back by popular demand and requests from the last time, these days enable us to reconnect with families we have worked with.  This time being no exception, there would be opportunities to create homemade takeaway to eat together…  handmade pizzas created by children and parents, pizza box design and a café area to eat and hang out together.  A circus skills workshop would take place outdoors, alongside fun archery. There was a room dedicated to making self-esteem boxes which was a quiet, reflective crafting space. Also on offer: outdoor badminton, skittles and giant bubble making, board games, service feedback space and not forgetting the slime table – shaving foam, glitter… an area that was full for the entire afternoon.   Around fifty children and adults attended. Everything was popular, the range of activities means…

We have moved!

We are very grateful for many happy years at Holy Cross Centre, Billesley. We have not moved far – our new offices are at The Moseley Exchange, 149-153 Alcester Road (behind the Post Office), Moseley, Birmingham B13 8JP.

Child Parent Relationship Therapy

Our CPRT courses have spaces for later this school year.  Theses courses usually run for eight-ten weeks (not half term week).  Would you like to know more about supporting your emotionally sensitive child using play therapy skills?  If so, please contact us using our enquiry form. This course does need the commitment of attendance at a weekly workshop and play sessions at home with your child but the rewards are huge.

Sponsored Walk April 2025

We did it!! Thank you to everyone who supported our sponsored walk. On 10th April at 8am, 21 of our staff and supporters, including staff from Hill Dickinson Law firm, set off from Four Oaks train station on an epic mission. We walked 35k across Birmingham, along green ways and water ways, through the areas where we work. Thank you to Brookvale Primary School and Stirchley Community Church for kindly hosting us for much needed rest breaks. The sun shined on us all day and after 9.5hrs, a few strained muscles and many blisters later, we finally reached Longbridge station at 5.30pm. It was worth every step and we can proudly announce that we smashed our target – raising an amazing £7,693!! This money will go towards our vital work with children and families across the city. Thank you to everyone…

Donate in memory of a loved one…

Lost someone and want to do something special in memory of them? What about making a donation to BTH this Christmas, to help other bereaved families. (You can just use the donate button at the top of our homepage). Or instead of writing Christmas cards you could donate the money you would have spent on cards and stamps to Beyond the Horizon? Or download the easyfundraising app and use it when you do your weekly or Christmas shopping and retailers will donate to us at no cost to you. Small but important actions. You will be supporting families in Birmingham who have experienced bereavement or domestic abuse this year to recover and thrive.

April 2024 Activity Day

We had a great day on 20 April. Fun-filled activities for our young people, a chance to connect with each other, make pizza and help us with our fundraising ideas for schools.

Triathlon success!

Thanks so much to Max one of our supporters who ran a triathlon for us this month and raised over £1800!  Thanks so much to you Max and to all your sponsors, on behalf of all the children and young people we work with!

Jade’s London Marathon 2023!

Well done Jade for completing the London Marathon and in a fantastic time of 5 hours and 27 minutes!  We are so grateful you ran for BTH and you looked great in the tee shirt! You can read all about Jade’s story here and you can still donate to her fundraising efforts here!  Jade first came in contact with Beyond the Horizon at the age of nine after her Dad died.  She had counselling with Beyond the Horizon at the time and recently got back in touch with us to say she would like to run the London Marathon for us! We were delighted. Well done Jade and massive congratulations from Beyond the Horizon!

Georgie’s Blog

Autumn term 2022 has been my first term working full-time as a play therapist for Beyond the Horizon and it has gone by so quickly! Working more hours has meant more clients, and that means a lot more meetings with lots of people. A great part of my role is meeting so many family members and professionals who are working hard to provide the best possible outcomes for my clients. Meeting so many caring and nurturing people is a great reminder of the goodness in the world even in difficult times. Another part of working with so many different young people is that I am holding lots of different thoughts, feelings and issues over each week. This can feel tough at times, so many of the young people I’m working with have had to deal with very challenging circumstances. This…

Stories of grief by young people

Persevering: Grief as told by young people is a set of podcasts by young people, sharing their stories about being bereaved.  Our staff have been listening to it and you can listen too here on spotify or here on apple podcasts.

Annual Report 2021-2022

Our Annual Report is available for you to download as a pdf.

A very big thank you!

We were really impressed this week by two groups of young people who represented their schools in the Envision Community Apprentice Programme and chose Beyond the Horizon as the charity they wanted to champion in a pitching challenge.  The young people worked with coaches from businesses across Birmingham to help them with confidence, team building and communication skills and the winning team won £100 for their chosen charity which we are very pleased to say, was us! The young people spoke so passionately about why they wanted to support our work and shared with the audience that it was their own lived experiences of bereavement and loss that motivated them to choose Beyond the Horizon.  We are extremely grateful! They got creative in their presentations too.  One young person wrote a poem which they were happy for us to share…

Positive thought of the week!

This week’s positive thought from a parent is… ‘We can only do our best with what we know at the time’

Freedom through play

This week I have begun Play Therapy with four new children. Being with them as they begin to explore in a new way, has reminded me of the freedom that play can bring. Play Therapy is based on creating a safe accepting relationship, within a consistent time and space, and then enjoying creating and playing together. Through this, children naturally begin to process their feelings and experiences through play. And then very gradually, often something a bit like magic begins to happen… children who are nervous try out being brave, quiet voices start to speak a bit louder, boisterous energy settles and becomes a bit calmer, and children who have been hurt begin to trust again. But you don’t have to be a therapist for this magic to happen. Whether you are a parent, teacher, brother, sister or friend –…

This too will pass

On Sunday, I felt rubbish. I woke up with back pain and heard torrential rain being blown against the window by heavy wind. Everything felt horrible, inside, and out. I wanted to hide in bed and not face the day. But with a long list of things to do, I reluctantly crawled out of bed and got on with the day. Later, that afternoon, I was walking through my local park and reflecting on the unexpected turn of the day. The rain had cleared, the sun shone gloriously, my jobs were mostly done, and my back pain had eased as I walked. The changes were so gradual, that I had hardly noticed them happening. But suddenly I was aware of feeling completely different: relaxed, at peace and happy. If you had told me at 7am that this is how the…

Remembering Day 12th March 2022

On Saturday 12th March we hosted a Remembering Day for all the families we have been in contact with who have lost a loved one or were already grieving at the start of the pandemic in 2020.  Many families had missed out on the chance to gather with others to remember their special person or to mark their anniversary due to restrictions.  We took time to remember people’s loved ones through crafts and memory activities and a collective time of quiet, gathered around the beautiful stones everyone had painted.  We also had plenty of food and fun times together including drumming and making slime.  Thank you so much to all the families that came and shared with us, to our great team of volunteers and staff and to the Sir John Middlemore Trust for funding our time together.
